Luke Marsh is a Leeds born artist and illustrator, currently based in London. He maintains a predominantly drawing-based practise, whilst also using a diverse range of materials to create 3-dimensional work as an extension to his drawings.
The prime concern of Luke Marsh's practise examines the concept of Queer Monstrosity. The work’s narrative hones in on the idea of the “queer” individual remaining a threat and embodying the persona of the “monster” to some.
Mythology and monsters have long played a large role within Luke's work, and it is a theme he identifies with queerness, in terms of how it can be perceived negatively within some territories, and the construction of homosexuality as a corruptive, vampiric desire.
This subject matter is a culmination of Luke's interest towards monstrosity, using classical Universal Horror iconography, in conjunction with his exterior influences and a fascination with Queer culture and the drag community. Having worked heavily within the gay community alongside his artistic practise, it has driven his understanding of the fluidity of gay subcultures, such as leather culture and drag.
